Safety
- Make sure your dog has a collar and tag with address and telephone number. This
will increase the chances of you being reunited with your pet if they ever escape.
- Make sure that any fences or boundaries on your property, are secure and high
enough, so that your dog cannot jump over them.
- If you take your dog in the car always have a leash on hand. This ensures that if
you need to get out of the car you can always control your dog.
- Always make sure you are prepared for an emergency e.g. Vet's phone number on hand.
- Have a cat carrier for each cat or other small pets on hand. This will make sure if
you need to get your pet out of the house/shed etc in a hurry, you can do so carefully and
keep them safe.
- Make sure if you leave your pets alone they have enough fresh water. And NEVER
leave your pets alone for a long period of time where they will miss feed etc.
- Always make sure you have enough of everything so you do not run out. E.g. food, or
pets medications.
- Keep your pet safe from things in your home and THINK. E.g. never leave chocolate
lying around as large quantities can be poisonous to pets, secure plants or anything you
do not want broken, never have poisonous plants in a place that pets could get hold of
them, be careful with candles or n open fire, and any other things that could cause a
hazard.
- Be careful with elecrics in particular - animals have sharp teeth and can bite
through cables, they can also get electrocuted by other sources so check your home.
- Make sure your pet is safe from other animals and people. Other dogs may not be as
friendly as yours, people can leave gates open etc.
- Never leave your pet alone in a hot vehicle or in a vehicle that could heat up, or
any other hot places where they may dehydrate, and remember when your pet is hot to give
them plenty or fresh cold water.
- Make sure during warmer weather when doors and windows are left open, that pets
cannot escape and are safe.
- Never leave medicines lying around, always keep out of reach.
- Keep ponds or other water features safe, place a grill over the top or fence it
off.
- Never let your pets near iced water as they could run on thin ice and fall through.
- Keep all dangerous objects out of the way e.g. sharp objects, paint, chemicals and
any other products that could harm your pets.
- When taking your dog in the car pet set belts are a good idea because if you stop
quickly they could hit the back of your seat, you can also get dog guards to secure an
area like the boot to keep you and your pet safe.
- Always make sure your pets have shelter and shade.
There are many other safety precautions to take with your pets but we
cannot list all of them.
Beware of all disasters your
pets could encounter and always THINK.
