Kat Baker – Channel swim for Happy Landings

Animal lover and super-swimmer, Kat Baker from Shepton Mallet is getting geared up for another British Channel challenge this summer in aid of Happy Landings.

But this time she has "upped the anti" and made it even tougher and is looking for your support. In September 2008, Kat made it from Dover to Calais in a six person relay swim, but this year she has organised a repeat of her massive challenge, with half the number of swimmers, doubling the time she will be spending in the water. As if that is not enough, she is now psyching up her team to beat the current three person relay team record!

In the middle of July, Kat will join her team mates in the Solo Wannabees, named because they all hope to swim the Channel alone some day, and they will take to the chilly, busy shipping lanes and raise money for three worthy causes.

The Solo Wannabees are having all their clothing sponsored by Shepton Mallet fish and chip shop, Whitstones, for which they are very grateful and Kat is hoping to raise more than £1,000 for Happy Landings again this year.

If you can help, please send your donation cheque payable to Happy Landings to the Happy Landings postal address with your name, contact details and stating clearly that it is for Kat’s swim. If you are a UK tax payer, please be sure to give us your post code and house number and include a signed slip of paper to say you allow us to claim Gift Aid tax relief against your donation. There will be a sponsor form available in the Happy Landings reception if you prefer to call in with your pledge. Thank you to everyone for your support and we will keep you posted of Kat's attempt later in the year.

HAPPY LANDINGS FUN DOG SHOW & OPEN DAY 2008

- A RECORD BREAKER!!

Roads and country lanes leading to Pylle were jammed with traffic on Sunday, as we juggled our car parking arrangements in order to cope with the surprise popularity of our fun dog show and open day.

Hopes of using the new agility course were abandoned as every available metre in the agility and dog exercise paddocks was used for parking and the volunteers manning the entries tent were swamped from noon onwards as they took 321 dog show class entries from 144 separate canine entrants.

Opting for one of the rare dry weekends in recent weeks, we were delighted at the success of the day and the turnout was “absolutely wonderful.

The day raised £2,520.89 from a combination of traders donations, traditional stalls and competitions, dog show entries, pet photo competition entries, a raffle and generous donations from visitors and entrants.

Fundraising and PR Manager Carol Vincent wanted to thank all of the donors, visitors, staff, stallholders and hard working volunteers who had made the day such a success.
It was a real community and group effort,” she said.

“ We had loads of lovely plants donated by supporters as well as Rocky Mountain Nursery, Brownes Garden Centre and Frome Garden Centre, and lots of supporters had made us wonderful cakes which all sold out very quickly.

“ Our hard working Frome fundraising ladies worked tirelessly in the refreshments marquee serving cream teas and it was lovely to see so many animal lovers and families enjoying themselves in the sunshine.

“ We begged and borrowed equipment for the day and had lovely raffle prizes donated to keep overheads to a minimum and even the dog show rosettes were donated, so every penny raised will be going towards the animals at Happy Landings and will make a real difference to what we are able to achieve.

“ I was staggered and delighted when I saw the number of people trying to get in at the start and also at the size of the queue building at the entries marquee and our volunteers Joyce Alford, Annan Gurowich and Georgina Bown did very well coping with the pressure of processing the entries which averaged at 25 per class.

“ It shows what a huge dog loving area we live in and all of the animals looked fabulous. How our judges, Roger Lewis from Delaware Veterinary Group and Emma Greaves from Crown Pet Foods made their decisions I do not know.

“ Roger had to choose from 31 entries in the prettiest bitch class and Emma had to choose from 48 in the final class of the day.

We are overwhelmed with how supportive and kind people are and how much they obviously adore their dogs – thank you to everyone for supporting us so brilliantly!

SILVER ANNIVERSARY AND OPENING OF NEW MULTI ANIMAL UNIT

We celebrated the 25th birthday of the Happy Landings charity this year and our patron, Valerie Singleton of Blue Peter fame helped our founder, Annabelle Walter open our wonderful new animal unit during our birthday party.

On July 6, 1983, Annabelle registered the charity responsible for all the work at Happy Landings, and even though the heavens opened in the morning and did not stop throwing it down all day, we had some hardy supporters trudge across our muddy paddock to help us celebrate the day.

Annabelle and Valerie cut the ribbon during a brief spell of sunshine, officially opening our new multi animal unit and Annabelle also revealed a plaque marking the opening and silver anniversary.

The unit is now home to our rescue cats and bunnies, and we are very proud of it too!

It may have taken us a long time to finish, but we got there in the end.

A huge thank you is due to all individuals and companies who donated time and materials to help us get it finished in time for our silver anniversary, and also a great big thank you to landscape garden designer, Jason Nosworthy.

Jason had re-designed our memorial garden in his spare time, and worked tirelessly in all weathers to get it ready for our big day, and as you can see it looks pretty wonderful too!
